Creative Tip: Prototyping with Photoshop Smart Objects.

PS-SmartObject-Packaing.png

This is one of my favorite tips from the last four years. It demonstrates how you can combine digital product photography with Adobe Photoshop Smart Objects to create editable virtual prototypes. The video was recorded over two years ago, but the technique remains as valuable today as it was then.

Do you work on product packaging jobs? Once you understand this approach, it can be used for some pretty remarkable results.

Doctor Brown is an incomparable Photoshop showman. If you ever have an opportunity to catch him live, do so.

Business Tip: 2008 Annual Designer Salary Survey.

The AIGA|Aquent Survey of Design Salaries 2008 is now available.

This survey is widely recognized as the most comprehensive look into how creative professionals are compensated. The results are drawn from responses from more than 6,200 design professionals across the United States.

Curious how you stack up with your peers? The website has a location-based salary calculator that lets you compare average salaries using a wide range of variables. (What's the average salary for a Creative Director in Seattle? How do salaries compare between design studios and in-house design departments?)

Enjoy your research.

Online Workshops: Announcing our first 4 test Webinars!

Thank you to everyone who participated in our online survey last week. We asked what topics you were most interested in seeing as an online webinar, and many of you took the time to share your opinions. We've picked four topics that people expressed a strong interest in, and we're starting with a test of 4 online workshops in August:

Wednesday, August 6 - Google for Graphic Designers.
Wednesday, August 13 - Creating Interactive PDFs.
Wednesday, August 20 - HTML Email Newsletters.
Wednesday, August 27 - Prepress with PDFs.

The cost is $79 per workshop. They are 1 hour long, with up to 30 minutes extra for Q&A. The size is limited to 10 participants to start. You'll need access to a good Internet connection and a phone. The workshops start at 9AM in Seattle, which means these times in the United States:

9AM - Pacific (Seattle, Los Angeles)
10AM - Mountain (Denver, Phoenix)
11AM - Central (Chicago, Minneapolis, Dallas)
12PM - Eastern (New York, Boston, Philadelphia)

For our readers outside the US, here is a link that shows what 9AM in Seattle translates to around the world:

We're adjusting to thinking in multiple time zones. If we get a good response from these first several workshops, we'll keep adding more.
