CreativeTechs QuickTips #39 Week of May 2, 2005

Tip One: When should you install Mac OS X Tiger?

The new version of Mac OS X Tiger was released Friday. We are quite excited about this new version, and we expect to be covering lots of new tips over the coming months. But from experience, the question we are going to be getting a lot in the coming week is "when should I upgrade?"

Our pragmatic answer is the same as previous major releases:

If you are a designer and your computer is your main source of livelihood then don't be the first person on the block to upgrade. CreativeTechs generally waits 2-3 months after a major release before we start officially recommending clients to install the upgrade on vital production computers.

So for the front-line Epro and design stations: We'd recommend waiting until late June or July to plan a major Tiger update. This gives more adventurous designers the chance to uncover any problems, incompatibilities, or other quirks. Meanwhile, CreativeTechs will be supporting the early adopters and building up our own list of unanticipated problems and solutions. When you are ready to make the move, we'll help make sure it is not into uncharted territory.

[Note: As part of the Apple Developer's Connection CreativeTechs has had access to pre-release versions of Mac OS X Tiger since early beta stages.]

Tip One: Cool Tiger Feature: Dashboard Widgets.

One of the most visible new features in Mac OS X is the new Dashboard. With a single click, the Dashboard appears on your screen, giving you fast access to small mini-applications called widgets. Widgets can be designed for fun as well as small useful utilities. This promises to greatly add to how we can use our Macs. Check out a QuickTime demo from Apple.

Web Developers: Design your own Widgets!

What I find most intriguing about Widgets is that they can be created using a mix of HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. All standard web development skills. Apple's documentation claims if you know how to create a web page, then you know how to create a widget.

There is a fairly technical tutorial about this topic on Apple's website:
