CreativeTechs QuickTips #58 Week of September 12, 2005

Tip One: The Zen of CSS Web Design.

Zen Garden is a remarkable website started in 2003 to demonstrate the power of designing web pages using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) rather than relying on frames and tables to define a web page's structure.

The hundreds of design variations displayed on this site all use an identical HTML file -- with talented designers contributing unique style sheets that control the look of that single page.

This site will be a little confusing (maybe overwhelming) for designers who don't do much with HTML. But if you are a web designer, this site can be an inspiration to start exploring what is possible with CSS. For those so inspired, we offer up two great books to get you started:

#1: The Zen of CSS Design. This is more inspirational than "how to". Showcases 36 examples from the Zen Garden site with a look at the design process and tools used.

#2: Stylin' with CSS: A Designer's Guide. Here is your "how to" book. Great tutorials and explanations to get started in building CSS-based websites now.

Tip Two: HP's Network Printer Wizard for Windows.

If you are trying to connect a PC (maybe your accounting station) to an HP laser printer on your network, the easiest way by far is to use HP's Network Printer Wizard.

HP Network Printer Wizard

The link above takes take you to HP's website where you can download a wizard for your version of Windows. The HP Printer Wizard streamlines the process for creating a network printer port in Windows, as well as providing an option to automatically download and install the latest Windows drivers for your printer from the Internet.

[Source: This obviously isn't a Mac tip. But this question keeps surfacing at design firms and ad agencies we support -- so we figured it was worth documenting.]
