Creative
Tip: Use
InDesign Tool Shortcuts while editing text.
Most
heavy Adobe InDesign users know at least some of the most common
Tool Shortcuts. For example pressing V to switch to the Selection
tool, or F for the Rectangle Frame. (Sidenote: We've created a small
InDesign Tool Shortcut
Cheatsheet if you'd like to keep all these
shortcuts handy)

But
here is the question that prompts today's tip: What if you want
to switch to the Selection tool while you're working inside a text
frame? You can't tap the V shortcut because you'll just end up adding
the letter "v" to your text. Sure you could deselect the
text box first, but that's a hassle.
Solution:
Add your own text frame-friendly shortcuts.
Choose
Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts and switch the Product Area to Tools.
Then scroll down to find the tool you need a new shortcut for. Click
inside the New Shortcut field and with the Context as Text, type
the shortcut you want. Make sure you use a modifier key such as
Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) and then a letter. For instance, use
Ctrl-Shift-Cmd-V for the Selection tool.
You
will now have two different shortcuts. The single letter can be
used when you’re outside a text frame, and the longer one
when you’re inside the frame.

We have a number of people to credit for this week's handy tip.
First off is CreativeTechs' client Philip Salmon, an in-house
designer at BECU who mentioned
this technique during a recent troubleshooting visit; Philip
read this trick in a weekly InDesign tips email published
by the producers of the InDesign
Conference; Leading us finally to the original author: Vector
Babe Sandee Cohen. I hope we did not leave anyone out.
