Jonny, you make a good point about building this information directly into the InDesign document. We've got lots of clients using that approach.

The one thing I like about a PDF-based solution is that it works with any software you are designing in, as long as the end result is a PDF.

You did not include an email, but if you read these comments again, I would appreciate if you could send me an example document with the two layers you use in it. It sounds like you have a good system, I'd love to write it up as a tip.

Thanks for the link to Mechanical Cubed Elliot. That looks like a facinating tool.

Cool, but if you can do it in Acrobat, can you also do it in Photoshop?

I prefer to add a layer in the design app.

e.g. I keep both Proofs label and Job Tag labels as library items in InDesign. I create a new top-most "Proof & Tag" layer, and drag from the library onto it. The opacity is set accordingly in InDesign.

I find this a better approach so that you have control over where the tag is applied so as not to obscure any critical data (in the case of the proof). And I don't need to open another app (Acrobat) to achieve this.

For final version, turn off the visibility of the Proof & Tag layer.

Nice article! The bonus tip is a good idea, but if you're serious about job tags you need to use a program like Mechanical Cubed. (http://tripletriangle.com/aboutome.php)
