Read on for an extended Q&A, and to ask your own questions in the comments. We’ve left some open slots on our schedule, so if you have a topic you’d like to see us cover, mention it in the comments below.
Q: What Time Do Classes Start?
A: That depends on where you live. People attend these workshops from all over the world. We start at 11AM mornings in Seattle. Here are the start times for time zones in the United States:
2PM – Eastern (New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Florida)
1PM – Central (Chicago, Minneapolis, Dallas)
12PM – Mountain (Denver)
11AM – Pacific (Seattle, Los Angeles)
10AM – Alaska
8AM – Hawaii
For international participants, follow this link to see how 11AM in Seattle translates to time zones around the world: What time is 11AM in Seattle? Here are some example start times for different cities:
7PM – London, Dublin, Algiers, Lagos
8PM – Amsterdam, Paris, Oslo, Prague, Zagreb
9PM – Athens, Jerusalem, Kyiv
10PM – Moscow, Dubai
11PM – Tashkent
Midnight – Islamabad
1AM Friday – Bangkok, Hanoi, Jakarta
2AM Friday – Hong Kong, Beijing, Perth
3AM Friday – Tokyo, Seoul
4AM Friday – Melbourne, Sydney
5AM Friday – Vladivostok
6AM Friday – Auckland
Q: How Long Are Classes?
A: Each class is roughly 90 minutes long, with an additional 30 minutes for audience questions. The Q&A is typically pretty valuable, so plan to stick around.
Q: How Many People Can Attend Each Webinar?
A: Our Webinar tool, GoToWebinar, has a limit of 1,000 attendees per class. Based on the popularity of our other free training, we expect to reach that limit on most classes.
Q: Can I Download Recorded Copies of Classes?
A: We record a high-resolution copy of each class, and we plan to make recorded copies available for a slight fee.
Q: How Can This Be Free?
A: We are trying to make a big splash, and we love working with a large audience. Help us spread the word. If we continue to attract a full audience, we’ll be able to keep offering these types of free courses for InDesign, Illustrator, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, and other Adobe products.
Q: Can I Post an Invitation on my Blog?
A: Yes. Please help spread the word. We need as many people as possible enrolled to make this free class format viable for us. You can post a link to the following URL, which we will keep updated as details change:
http://creativetechs.com/training
Thank you. This should be an amazing trip!

August 9th, 2009 at 5:46 pm
i am interested in learning more…
if there is room let me know… Thanks
August 10th, 2009 at 4:41 am
I would definitely like to participate in this.
August 10th, 2009 at 5:10 am
Can we just sign up for the subjects we are interested?
August 10th, 2009 at 5:37 am
I’m interested in some of the things. Is it possible to sign up for the subjects we are interested in?
August 10th, 2009 at 5:39 am
I signed up and excited to find out all about this new software I have bought. I was just wondering how this works…is it self paced…or do we have to be on line at a certain time…to get the class?
August 10th, 2009 at 5:43 am
Bonnie, Cindy,
You can certainly choose to only attend certain classes that you are interested in. But you’ll need to sign up for the overall class notifications to get the webinar links to sign in.
So sign up for the email notices. And just come to the classes that you want.
~Craig
August 10th, 2009 at 6:07 am
I am only interested in the color corrections.
Ok will do.
I would like to see more advanced level courses. These appear to be great basics/introductions but not much more.
August 10th, 2009 at 6:10 am
Bonnie, what are some other topics you’d like to see covered?
August 10th, 2009 at 6:38 am
ActionScript 3 for designers. Yes this is a great OO scripting program, but there is a wide range of applications that can be done created out of basic scripts. Discuss the pros and cons of external code and internal code. Discuss that like in all languages everyone has a style of speaking and uses grammar differently. Teach basic OO concepts and build some reliable reusable scripts for everyday purposes. Such as a button, auto play, sound control and so on.
Advance CSS techniques…Do more than cover a float. Give a good understanding when and how to control the look of a HTML code on various devices: print, screen and mobile. Cover advance positioning techniques. Cover accessibility issues to be considered in CSS.
Advance course for HTML emails that are cross browser compliant. FAST techniques! Especially focus on the trouble shooting… Discuss testing. I use litmus for example. Cover other ways of testing.
Since you do basic classes so well… How about Movies for Newbies. Introduction to Final cut and Final Cut express concentrating on the process foe making web movies for individuals and small design firms.
Oh dear you caught me on a Monday… I could go on.
August 10th, 2009 at 6:48 am
I have passed the word along to many of my friends, and also to some of my on line groups. I loved the Spring course that lasted 6 weeks, and I am looking forward to this one.
August 10th, 2009 at 7:09 am
I am SO stoked, and can’t wait for this class! I’m a homeschooler, and I’m having my high school student take this class as an arts class (as well as the Photography course).
Betty Nance: The only way this is a self-paced course is if you purchase the downloads. Then you can watch (or rewatch) at your leisure!) All the info is posted above.
August 10th, 2009 at 7:12 am
If i understand things correctly, we sign up – get email link and when clicked on said link will take us to the classes?
Is that correct ?
Is there a need to download any software to see the classes please ?
Thank you
August 10th, 2009 at 7:35 am
Will we be able to purchase downloads of just the courses we are interested in? I attended the first Photoshop course, and it was great!
August 10th, 2009 at 8:41 am
Teresa -
The GoToWebinar software downloads to your computer when you log into the class. It’s free and works on both Macs and PCs.
Ina -
You should be able to purchase just individual sessions if you’re not interested in purchasing the entire course.
Feel free to send questions directly to us at training@creativetechs.com
August 10th, 2009 at 8:43 am
Please sign me up for the new Photoshop class. I’ll be out of the country for part of the time but will probably opt at the end for the recorded copies of the classes. Thanks.
August 10th, 2009 at 9:15 am
thanks for what you are doing…..I will attend when possible
August 10th, 2009 at 10:46 am
I would love to partake.. Is there any way to record or review this at a diff time of day than listed for those of us who work during the day hrs? Via an online video repete or something simular? Thanks!
August 10th, 2009 at 10:55 am
Oh.. I just found my own answer. How much will the fee be? Thanks again!
August 10th, 2009 at 11:03 am
LJ -
Individual sessions will likely be $15 each. We have not yet set a purchase price for the full course.
Feel free to send questions directly to us at training@creativetechs.com
August 10th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
So unfortunately, it’s not actually free since the free trial of GoToWebinar lasts for only 30 days… that’s too bad. I was all stoked to sign up!
August 10th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
At least most of the classes will be at a reasonable time for me when U.S. stops daylight saving and my state in Aus. begins it in October. 4.00 am in our cold months was really testing my commitment but I attended every one!!
August 10th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
Sarah,
I think that *attendees* can login to the GoToWebinar meetings any time. It is only the person who is *holding* the meeting/class (in this case, Creativetechs) would have to pay for the GTW service.
Can anyone verify that? If not, then I’m disappointed as well, as I won’t be signing up/paying for GTW.
August 10th, 2009 at 5:33 pm
I took your 6 week photoshop class but I really need to do some more work on learning photoshop more completely. Every time I try a project, it seems to take forever and never comes out exactly right! So I’m game to try a longer course in the hopes that these concepts will finally sink in. You guys are great, btw!
August 10th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
Yipee! Never mind that I actually learn stuff. I am so looking forward to this course.
Sarah, classes are ABSOLUTELY free. If you want to downloaded the recorded versions, they’re available for purchase, but if you just want to sit in on some of the best online classes anywhere, Craig extends his welcome … to the world.
Hope to see you there.
Shannon

Okay, I dug deeper and found this answer in the FAQ’s:
“You do not need to have a GoToWebinar account to register for and join a Webinar organized by a GoToWebinar customer. You also do not need to pre-install any software prior to joining the Webinar. You participate as a guest of the Webinar organizer, at no cost to you.”
Wonderful!
August 10th, 2009 at 6:40 pm
I must say.. A quanity purchase price works for me quite well as a second option. This way I can stay at work and not get fired.. plus have the videos to refer to whenever I need to. Which i’m sure will be often. Free is even better of cousre.. but that time of day is very hard for those of us with full time jobs.. Perhaps a 2nd same night re-run video that we can watch might resolve the working person dilema.. hummm food for thought? Thanks for the quick reply David~
Lj Maxx a P.S. wanna be
August 10th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
I’d love to join in but 2am is pushing it a bit for me in Perth’s time zone – I’d love to come though!
August 10th, 2009 at 7:46 pm
Melissa.. I think it is at p.m. not a.m.. See above for more details. ~:)
August 10th, 2009 at 7:54 pm
I would second the idea of a same day rerun video…
August 10th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
Yay! I’m so glad to hear that there is definitely no charge for GTM. I have been in some of the previous classes for PS, Illustrator, etc., and they’ve all been GREAT! I’m very excited for this series. I do hope there are some more advanced techniques as well, but understand that they can’t possibly cover everything, at all skill levels. Thanks so much, CT, for offering these live courses free!
August 10th, 2009 at 8:18 pm
LjMaxx – I’m in Aus – I just double checked that link -Perth Fri 2:00 AM
August 11th, 2009 at 3:26 am
Melissa.. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.. well thats very cool.. but yes.. 13 plus 1/2 hrs diff from me here in time.. So Sorry but so jealous too! Have a great day Melissa~
August 11th, 2009 at 7:40 am
I just have to say that I took the 4-week Digi Photog course recently and loved it! I knew some info but John is quite a comprehensive and great teacher, and he provides very helpful visual tools to learn. I have been laid off for more than a year so these free courses have been an exciting tool in continuing to pursue my photography passion. I cannot thank your team enough!!
On that note, I’m definitely taking the 10-week photog and going to try to do the 6mo PS courses. Will you please tell me which version of PS will be used? I’m sure we won’t have to have the same version. I have one version and access to another.
Thanks!
Best regards,
Teresa

We generally use CS4 as our demonstration template in all our presentations. If there are differences between how things are done in CS3 and CS4 the instructors try to outline each method.

Is this course only for Mac users?
August 11th, 2009 at 10:56 pm
I’d like to learn about correcting perspective of converging verticals like when shooting buildings, looking upward. Not simple/easy perspective issues but the more complicated ones.

This course is for both Mac and PC users.

Yes, I’m very interested in this free program as I am thinking of transitioning from PhotoShop Elements to PhotoShop. However I do have a concern that is set up for Macs with me having a PC (Vista). I wasn’t born with a ‘mouse’ in my hand, being a baby boomer so hope this might have an avenue to answer ’simple questions’ that you may
‘assume’ the user would know. Looking forward to hearing of it’s success and begin with the group.

You’ll have the ability to either ask questions via GoToWebinar or via Twitter. With Twitter you’ll often get answers faster because other attendees will respond before the instructor can. Our Tweetchat room address is: http://tweetchat.com/room/creativetechs

I’ve totally love a 2nd run of the same presentation at an alternate time that day – my time zone’s a bit tricky (2am for me!)
August 14th, 2009 at 9:00 am
I’m really interested in this, so please include me in this free workshop!

I have registered and am interested. After reviewing the syllabus, I think that I would like some more teaching regarding the pen tool and masks.

Will these lessons be available as podcasts?

Hi are you going to send us by mail the code for the webinar?…I can see 2 dates for the photoshop training in September, the 2nd and the 3rd, can you confirm wich one is the right one..thanks a lot

While this course focuses on the Creative Suite 4 version of Photoshop there’s a good chance that you’ll be able to pick up some tips that you can use with Photoshop Elements.

Hi and thanks for doing this. This may be a ridiculous question but do I need a copy of Photoshop on my computer to take this class?
August 21st, 2009 at 2:31 pm
I just signed up for the class. Should Oct. 24 (Sat.) actually be Oct. 29 (Thurs.)?
August 21st, 2009 at 3:02 pm

Yes, the October 24th is a mistake. It should be the 29th. Thank you for catching that!

i am in Sydney- although 4am is pretty early for me at least it won’t interfere with the work day!! My quetion is is cs2 really too outdated to use??
August 22nd, 2009 at 8:54 am
Dianne -
You’d probably still get some useful tips out of the classes even if you’re still using CS2. And it will be a good preview of what you can look forward to in CS4 (or CS5 eventually).
We do have quite a few folks in Oz who brave the mornings to join us. I’m always impressed by that. 5 am is my wake up time and I’d never be able to learn anything then!

oh, I would luv to take these classes!
thanks bunches for the opportunity!!!
August 23rd, 2009 at 3:45 pm
I might have to wait as well,
unless there’s a 2nd broadcast time, (please – just a repeat of the first) as much as I’d like to say yes to a 4am class, reality and 2 kids to get to school will make it virtully impossible
another sad Aussie
August 23rd, 2009 at 9:45 pm
Hi, I’m an Aussie too and would love to do some of these courses, not sure how to go about it and the times unfortunately are during the night, here in Victoria. Would perhaps be interested in downloads of the classes.

August 26th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
Hello,
This sounds awesome, but, I am not only a PC/Windows user, but I am still using PS 7.0. Are these classes valid for software that old? I really need to get a grasp on layers and masks specifically.
Thank you!
August 26th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Melisa -
Being a PC user shouldn’t be a problem – Jason is good at saying how actions are done differently in Windows than on the Mac. You’d probably still learn something even if your version is Photoshop 7. You just won’t learn as much that you’ll be able to instantly put to use
August 31st, 2009 at 6:09 am
What day of the week will these be held?
August 31st, 2009 at 7:40 am

I found John’s previous Photoshop classes to be so much better than other’s I’ve taken elsewhere. His wonderful visuals and clear explanations really made things clear and help my poor memory keep things a little longer in my head!
I’m taking this class along with the Photography and Lightshop classes. I like to purchase because my memory cells don’t retain things easily, but am concerned about the high cost these might be. I would love to see some sort of monthly plan or something lol!

September 3rd, 2009 at 10:53 am
Sorry Folks. This class filled up very fast today (10 minutes before class started). GoToWebinar a 1,000 person limit, and although we currently have a few open spaces from people logging on (maybe 15) it appears that GoToWebinar isn’t letting people take advantage of those open spaces.
~Craig
PS. I’m working on an option to help make up for that to our guests in other time zones.
September 3rd, 2009 at 10:56 am
Know your feelings Monique. Its 4am here is Qld too and unfortunily I too have missed out on my spot even though I joined 10min early.
Thanks Craig for looking into the Other Time zones. It would be great if there is another option. Or larger classes.
September 3rd, 2009 at 10:58 am
I had trouble getting into the class too. I hope to catch next week’s class.

September 4th, 2009 at 8:16 am
Will this work with the trial version of Photoshop? Also, did first class already happen? Is it available after the fact?
September 4th, 2009 at 9:00 am
Carrie -
Jason uses Photoshop CS4 for his demonstrations. If your trial version is of that then this class definitely applies.
The first session was broadcast yesterday. A lot of folks were not able to access the webinar (we hit our 1000 person attendee limit 5 minutes before the class started!) so Craig has promised to provide limited access to a recording of yesterday’s session. At the moment I don’t know how that’s going to happen. Craig is still working out the details. I do know that when the recording is available he will send out an email notice to the Photoshop Course registration list. It usually takes between 2 to 4 days to get a recording processed, edited and then uploaded to the web so you can expect that notice by Monday. If you haven’t heard from us by then please free to email me directly at training@creativetechs.com
September 4th, 2009 at 9:52 am
Why did I get four notifications in my inbox with the link to join the Webinar after the class was over?
What do I need to do so I can get just one of those emails before class starts instead of four after it starts?
September 4th, 2009 at 10:01 am
Susan in Portland -
That’s a good question. It’s also one that I won’t be able to troubleshoot via responses on our blog here. Would you like to email me directly at training@creativetechs.com?

I want to take this course but I am at work on Thursdays at 11:00 when the class takes place in my time zone. So how can I purchase the series to view at a different time?

i just tried to login but it is full. i know last week you said you might offer a recorded version for a day or so after for free. will you do this again? i really wanted to be in the layers session. thanks!
September 10th, 2009 at 10:20 am
I’ve been trying to login to this class since I got my notification 1 hour ago and was unsuccessful every single time (most recent versions of iMac, Leopard, CS4, Firefox) – this is intolerable. I think a podcast should be auto available for download asap the webinar is over so subscribers can stop wasting valuable time. *sigh*

We will be posting an embedded recording of this week’s session at http://creativetechs.com/training. Just wait a couple of days. When you get to there click on the class image on the left side of the page and the embedded video will open up.

If you’ve purchased the class downloads you never have to worry about logging into the live class. You just download the videos after they are posted.
As for the today’s class, our 1000 attendee limit has been reached. The class is full.
As our classes become more popular it becomes more of a challenge to get in. We do allow folks to sign in up to 45 minutes before the class begins but that won’t work for everyone. And, as you’ve experienced, sometimes there are problems logging in.
So we are now posting embedded videos of previous weeks classes for limited periods at http://creativetechs.com/training
If you miss a class just wait a couple of days and go to that site. Click on the image of the class you’re interested in on the left side of the page and start watching!

Additionally – to Gretchen above – those of us who’ve invested the time to register and participate should not be charged to access these classes because the system, arbitrarily, kicks us out. I’ve tried to gain access for two weeks now and shouldn’t have to pay for the download of a course I’ve been offered for free.
There’s no other way to get into the class except via your link. If your system denies my access I have no recourse but to try until I get in. Clearly the system has failed, so you should provide an alternative for those of us who’ve been denied – I strongly feel that an auto-subscribed podcast version would reduce the system’s strain re: granting access to the classes. If not podcast, then provide a rebroadcasted video version of the class to subscribers for one week following the close of each weeks webinar.
Is my/our time not as valuable as yours?

Please read my response to your previous post. Is that an alternative that works for you?

David, I see we were composing at the same time..
I will go to the link provided. Thanks.

Just curious- will Jason be teaching the Scrapbooking techniques on Nov 12?
September 10th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
Susan in Portland -
As far as I know he will. Right now Nov. 12th seems a very long way away. Please ask again toward the end of October.
Feel free to send questions directly to CreativeTechs at training@creativetechs.com

Thank you CreativeTechs for having audio and some video during today’s class available in Tinychat. It gives people who were not able to get into the Webinar a little taste of what the classes are like.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
David,
I was curious because… well, I haven’t seen too many men who scrapbook. Not that they wouldn’t be good at it. It just seems like the worlds of scrapbooking and digital scrapbooking are dominated by females.
So it be good to see men do a little scrapbooking and see their artistic abilities.

Is there an iCal schedule I can download for this???
September 16th, 2009 at 9:22 pm
How can we find out about future classes. This looks really cool, I’d love to watch a live class. I guess I will sign up for your newsletter. Thanks for doing this. I have been a member at: Learn Photoshop Now for some time. They have a ton of video tutorials which have helped me grasp the basics, but I would like to see a live demonstration. Thanks.

I missed the last class for this. I usually get a link to watch it. I haven’t received it yet. Is it coming out?
September 23rd, 2009 at 10:57 pm
Suggestions for future classes:
1) Sharpening techniques (there must be many ways to do this reliably)
2) Removing chromatic aberrations
3) Removing noise
All three of these must be done without softening the image.

September 26th, 2009 at 7:31 pm

September 27th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
I have heard nothing but praise for your course. I would love to take the class, but I am at work when you are having them. Can the free class be viewed at a later time that day?
Thanks.

I have struggled with the pen tool until last week when watching the “pen tool” class and had an “ahaaaaaaa” moment followed by a big smile. Thank you and keep these wonderful classes coming, I always learn something!
October 15th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
Just want to thank you for the terrific courses. I’m taking Dreamweaver and Photoshop. I was laid off last spring, so I have plenty of time but no money to take classes. (BTW, your class download prices are also excellent — each course would cost $800+ at the local community college.)
The classes are very well done and they’re helping me sharpen my skills, which I hope will make me more marketable. I am recommending the classes to everyone I know.
Keep up the good work!
October 15th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
I wish I could take this but I am at work at 11:00 on Thursdays. I am however, enjoying Lightroom on Mondays, my day off. Do you think you might offer Photoshop on a Monday after this course is over?
October 16th, 2009 at 8:14 am
Gretchen -
It’s always possible. We’re gearing up to offer at least one class a day Monday thru Friday by 2010.

You can do the course from home or a work – wherever you have an internet connection. If you purchase the downloads you can play them anytime, at your convenience.
October 20th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
I would like to take this course but I am unable due to conflict with my work schedule.

I’d like to purchase this new Photoshop course but the cheapest way, lol.
I took the first basic course earlier in the year so thought I might skip the first 5 week of this course purchase, also maybe skip the scrapbooking one because I’m pretty advanced in Photoshop for scrapbooking, and if it’s for beginners that wouldn’t be for me (however if it has stuff I don’t know, I might want to purchase that one too)
I only find one way to purchase:
PURCHASE: 5-Week Photoshop Fundamentals ($45)
Where is the second 5-Week, and what is the cost of the whole thing?

There are purchase links for individual sessions or the full 6 Month course here -

David,
I’ve been looking for this, thank you so much for the links. I love these classes……now I have to decide!
October 28th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
Oh no! Somehow, I missed the notification that the Cloning Basics class was on Saturday, October 24 like it is listed above. I had planned on all of the classes being on Thursdays and thought it would be on the 29th. Good thing I am purchasing the classes.
October 29th, 2009 at 7:29 am
Chris -
The 24th is incorrect. The class is today, Thursday, as usual.
October 29th, 2009 at 10:10 am
Maybe someone should have changed it.
October 30th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
I see there are two of us named “chris”.
I only missed half the cloning class, and this was my fault because I took a nap! However, I did decide to purchase the full 6 Month course so I can now nap without worry! Thanks again for those links David.

FYI, I haven’t been getting email notifications for the webinars…you might want to check whatever is sending them…

If you’d like me to check and make sure that we are sending out notices to you please email me at training@creativetechs.com.
I’d also recommend checking your email’s spam filter. Even if you’ve gotten our notices in the past our emails sometimes get blocked.

I’m really keen. haven’t got time to travel to and fro to a local class in Western Australia so I’ll do this – but 11.00 is 1am in Perth, Western Australia so I’ll buy the course.
thanks

Do you run the course on Apple Mac or Windows? I have Windows.

November 23rd, 2009 at 10:11 am

We use Photoshop CS4 for Mac as our demonstration template but Jason, our instructor is pretty good at saying when things are done differently in Windows. If you’d like a sample of what the Course is like please check out the class excerpts at http://creativetechs.com/training/photoshop-course/
Click on the blue text links on the right side of the page to go to the embedded video. You’ll want to start with Sept 17th. Sept 3rd and Sept. 10th have expired.
