Each week I’m more amazed at what John’s extended Digital Photography course is growing into. Each week John packs in more information than I thought was possible. And he does it with beautifully clear examples and illustrations. How does this course compare to other photography courses you’ve seen?
I’m LOVING these classes, even though I have a pretty good grasp of photography and how to use my various dSLR cameras. John’s clear examples are extremely easy to understand. I’m recommending these classes to everyone who has ever asked me for help in improving their photography. John’s expertise on this subject, combined with his ability to simplify and tell a story, makes him the perfect teacher for this photography course. This course would be an excellent way for anyone to learn more about photography.
John Greengo’s photography classes are the very best I’ve ever found online, or offline, for that matter! I can’t tell you how much I’m learning!
After the lens class, I picked up one of Scott Kelby’s books and checked out the chapter on lens, and I actually “understood” what he was talking about! The first time I read through it, it could have been in a foreign language for all I knew!
Thank you John for helping me master this new language!
John’s classes are the best photography classes and as an added bonus they are FREE!
I’ve read countless books, but just didn’t “Get it” about shutter speed and aperture. One class of John’s and I got it and had to go around the house playing with it lol. (It was night)
Every class is well planned, well thought out and has excellent visuals! He explains in a language that I understand. He is definitely NOT packing in to much information!
Keep up the awesome work John!
I am thoroughly enjoying all of the classes I am currently taking. The Power Point Presentations that John labors over in preparation for the lessons are absolutely amazing. If you are a visual learner, I would recommend purchasing the downloads. They are priceless, in my opinion.
John does an amazing job with the 10-Week Digital Photography class. He is an excellent teacher and mentor. His presentation material is top-notch with rich contents and excellent diagrams. They are visually stimulating and easily understood. All have been designed with enormous thoughts and efforts to help explain key photographic concepts.
I think this body of work is one of the best materials around. It’s the best value for beginner to intermediate photographers who want to get more out of photography.
Highly recommended. Thanks John.
The time John puts into preparing for these classes is obvious from the first slide. You can tell he is a very talented photographer with a deep understanding for what he does.
His illustrations on things like histograms and aperture immediately answered questions for me that others have not been able to.
The best thing about the class is that I don’t think John realizes how good of a teacher he is. His style is very casual and seems effortless.
After each class I can’t wait to go out and try some of the things John has taught me.
I’m really enjoying these classes! I wish I had the opportunity to go out and shoot afterward since the classes are so packed with info. I’ve been writing good notes, but those notes only go so far if I’m not putting that knowledge to work. However, I’m learning a lot and thanks again for putting these free webinars on. I still can’t believe they’re free. Thanks again John, you are doing a great job and I’m anxious to keep learning!
I am enjoying these classes very much. I have a point and shoot and am trying to apply the stuff I am learning to my camera. I dont think I’ll ever be able to master an SLR at my advanced age of 61. John puts so much stuff into his lectures I am amazed. I particularly like hearing the hints and tips about how to take a fab picture. I know John has no liking for a point and shoot but is it possible to have a little bit of info on improving techniques for this kind of camera?
Thanks once again for these fab, free lectures that I receive via my pc in Cramlington, Northumberland, England. Amazing!!!!
John brings photography to people who have never thought about more than aiming and shooting as well as to people who have a camera bag full of SLR cameras and lens. And to think we get all his expertise and knowledge for FREE? Just amazing!
AWESOME class on exposure. Clear and concise, with superb visuals, John has enabled me to better understand why sometimes (more often than I’d like admit!) I just don’t get the shot that I wanted.
I attend many seminars, and all kinds of training and supplemental education on photography, but not one of those has come close to presenting the material in such a way that I “just get it” like John’s classes.
Thanks John for your time, effort and dedication to helping others improve their skills.
I would recommend this class to everybody who is interested in photography. John’s presentations are very clear and have excellent illustrations. You can see that a lot of work went into creating them.
Thank you, John!
John is a natural teacher and it is obvious he has spent hours preparing excellent, and easily understood presentations. I think John should write a book using some of his amazing power point slides and pictures, including technical details of his shots. I am a chart type of person, and would enjoy a few reproducible charts that you could take with you in the field. This book could also include a DVD with these classes and supplemental excerpts of the Q &A sessions. The Q & A sessions are very informative and a great part of the class. I love the visual and auditory class, but would also cherish and purchase a book and a DVD, having taken the class and knowing the many points John covers. I also have a point and shoot and think that many photographers would have some form of point and shoot for a back up of sorts. A class on the basics of a point and shoot, and how to get the best out of it might be useful as well. For example, I don’t understand how to manage depth of field out of a point and shoot as the apertures are so limited. Might there be a bit of room for this in the gadget bag session?? I would also like to send kudos to your management team – I had a hook up question yesterday before class and received an immediate response notwithstanding the fact you were preparing for up to 1,000 people to sign up on line. Well managed and well presented, and of course, I will make sure that you are well recommended to anyone I know that is interested in digital photography. I am hoping to sign up for your other classes on Lightroom and Photoshop next session when I hope to be in the “Digital Darkroom” portion of my learning curve on photography. Thanks again – I am sure you will do well as you are presenting such a great class applicable for so many different levels of expertise.
Many thanks, John, for your excellent class on Exposure. Your presentation was clear and concise. The graphics and images are superb!. I look forward to future classes. Thank you!!!
Sincerely,
Lee
I’m an advanced amateur photographer with a reasonably solid understanding of the DSLR and point-and-shoot cameras I use. However, I still have much to learn and John’s classes have helped me in many ways:
- to more clearly explain photography terms and techniques (more lucid explanations than any class or book I’ve used) that I can take and immediately use
- understand new/different approaches to taking pictures including appropriate tradeoffs with aperture, shutter speed, ISO
- his visual approach with the excellent presentation/slides works wonders to explain complex topics in a visual way that works well for me and many photographers (thanks John for your many hours creating a visually compelling and understandable approach to conveying complex materials!)
John has a gift at making complex topics understandable to those of all skill & knowledge levels. Thanks John!
I have just spent about 1.5 hours with my camera and instruction book and I actually UNDERSTAND what I am reading!! I tried reading the manual when the camera was first purchased (2.5 years ago) and stopped because I didn’t have the basic knowledge that I needed to understand the terms and settings. Thank you so much for this wonderful course.
Hello John!
Thank you so very much for taking the time to put this presentation together. For the first time I am finally understanding the interrelationship between aperture, shutter priority and ISO. The diagrams that you create help me to understand in a way that I have not been able to before. Plus having the photographs to help one see how this relates is another way to help me visualize how this all works! I missed the lens class because I was out shooting hummingbirds. Your info helped me to get better shots that very day! (I have now purchased all 10 classes so that I won’t miss another class!) BTW I had wondered why my Canon 40D when set to Auto ISO always went to 400 instead of 100. Now I know. Plus I know now to never use this setting.
I can hardly wait for the next class. Thank you for caring, John Greengo. Because of the time you are willing to spend in preparation and delivery makes me a better and more inspired photographer!!!! Art Wolfe is lucky to have you!
John,
Excellent job of explaining how aperture relates to depth of field, to shutter speed, and ISO. I now have a better grasp of what all the numbers mean, not a complete grasp, but you have helped to de-mystify the process and made it much easier to understand. As a novice photographer I now have a better shot of actually getting the picture I want, and not just hoping for the best. Practice, practice and practice, but at least now there is a little more knowledge behind what I’m doing. Thanks for the digestible way in which you present the topic. Well done.
sincerely, Wm. Ingersoll
I’m so grateful to have enrolled to John Greengo’s class. So far all the classes have been tremendously awesome nevertheless helpful especially to DSLR beginners, like myself. His explanation thru graphics used are easily understood (given the technical jargons), + fun + interesting. That countless hours of preparing the classes really paid off i supposed, + i’m totally loving it!
I have the intention of purchasing this 10-week-class together with the earlier 4-week-class. Can’t wait to participate on the postponed Exposure 24! Keep up the great work on what’s in store for us John, + kudos to Craig + Creative Techs team together with GoToWebinar for making this happen!
Digital photography class is great. It will be very useful. This class will provide skills that will be a big improvement on my current digital photography which is basically crossing my fingers before pointing and clicking ;o) Thanks!
John –
The classes you’ve led have been full of more information than I anticipated. My camera is being utilized in the way it was intended to be now rather than quickly taking a shot because I’m afraid I’ll get a setting wrong or I can’t scroll through the menu fast enough to find the right setting. Thank you for helping unleash the creativity hiding within the lens, waiting for what my eye sees in the surruondings encompassing me. Thanks so very much for awesome classes!!!
John, you’ve succeeded in turning very left brain material into music to my right brain’s ears. No small feat.
I so appreciate every painstaking minute you’ve clearly put into your presentation and I purchased the 10 week course because the first 3 classes were so jam-packed with hot tips and goodness that I knew I’d want to review classes again.
Thank you CT for all of your efforts in offering this course and thank you John for sharing your knowledge with us!
I’ve learned if you don’t get the basics down, you struggle to get the end product you want or need. I spend too much time doing post work when I could be behind the camera doing it in camera vs post work. I really needed this class on exposure and it’s the first time that someone explained it in such a way that it made sense to me. Not only making sense, but in a way that I can actually go use it knowing what my options are. I appreciate all of the hours spent in the slides you made. They are so clear and easy to understand. Thank you for sharing your skills and making it so enjoyable.
I am a scrapper, but not very good at taking photographs or rather i always wanted to take interesting photographs. I loved the 4-week class especially the “aesthetics” part. I love seeing u’r weekend pics. inspires me to try different compositions. Love the tech stuff; especially u’r way of explaining it.. i never really understood shutter speed, aperture or ISO. so enlightening
. Thank-you. waiting for the Aesthetics class..
. Maybe if i am able to start taking more interesting photographs i might invest into a SLR camera. its a bit too expensive for me right-now
. Thanks again for the classes.
So glad that these training sessions are available for free viewing for a week and purchase after. I’m new to photography, and it’s a relief to know that I can review this huge amount of really helpful information over and over until I really get it. Thank you!
Thank you so much for these classes. I am new to photography and do not know very much. I wanted to be able to take better pictures with my new DSLR, but was unable to take a class at the local college. These classes are amazing!!! I am learning so much and especially with the easy to understand explanations and diagrams. Thank you John for all the work you have put into these classes. I can’t wait for next weeks class!!!!!!
John and Craig,
You all are indeed doing a great job. For a developing photographer like myself, the detailed presentations (including excellent visual illustrations) are an invaluable reinforcement to the learning process. I feel privileged to be in Seattle and able to be a part of live audience right now. And, as you can see from the comments here, as well as the numbers of the world-wide audience tuning in on the web, you are inspiring thousands of people to pick up a camera and shoot. Great work. Thank you!
John, You’re doing a great job of explaining things. I’ve been totally mystified for years about camera technicalities. In the past, I could look through the viewfinder and see a potentially great photo, but not have a clue about how to achieve the desired end result. Now I have some tools and parameters to work with. With practice I hope to become more proficient as a photographer. Additionally, your presentation graphics are outstanding. It’s evident that you spend much time contemplating and creating your class.
Thank you so much. I think I am finally beginning to understand a little of what is going on with the camera. Please keep up the good work. It is appreciated.
John,
I am not able to always go to the live webcast, but I look forward every week to the online version. Due to recent economic issues and my change in income, I am not able to purchase the classes. I have gleaned so much from the “free stuff”….thanks for making these available!
These classes have obviously been very well thought out and John has the ability to present the lessons in a clear, easy to understand and fun way!
John, you are an amazing teacher. I love your visuals…they really make the concepts easy to understand! After reading countless books and online articles on aperture, shutter speed, iso and exposure, I’m finally ‘getting it’.
Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you!
I’ll definitely be buying this course!
Thank you for the classes, free is within my price range! I was going to write a long letter, but I instead decided to keep it short and simple… John (and everyone who make this possible) YOU ROCK !
Amazing classes that are so well presented . ..having been an adult education teacher, I KNOW how much behind the scenes preparation there is and appreciate the effort so very much Look forward to every week’s session and have purchased the series. Keep it u . … you are a fabulous presenter/teacher/educator.
The classes are very well presented, great teacher, superb lecturer….is there any videos for the retouching sessions?….thanks a lot John and everybody else that makes possible the webinars….what about a website for submission of images to be critiqued for a fee thank you all!!! Cheers:)
I agree with all of the above, in spades.
I have not managed to attend the free courses, but based on the feedback above I just bought the full 10-week course
Really looking forward to the classes!!
Fantastic job John! You have taken an “elephant” of information and made it chewable for everyone no matter what the level of camera knowledge one has.
If your classes continue at this rate this 10week Photography course will become not only a classic for everyone to own from the beginner to the advance, but also affordable without putting anyone in the poor-house.
I have always been interested in photography as a hobby but have never had the resources to take a class, so I greatly appreciate that this class is free. Because it is being offered for no charge, I didn’t expect much, but was I ever wrong! The effort John puts into the lectures is quite evident as is his genuine desire to impart his expertise to the participants. He is clear and concise and I now understand a great deal of the terminology which seemed like a foreign language.
I look forward to the remaining classes. Thanks so much for offering this class!
These classes are worth well more than $50-75. John does an excellent job visually presenting a large amount of information in a clear, concise manner. Highly recommended to anyone serious about photography.
These classes are absolutely awesome yall! John, you are doing a FANTABULOUS (is that a word) job at these Beginner’s Photography courses. You (along with the other wonderful guys) are one of the best teachers I have seen. I am a serious visual and kinesthetic learner, and all the charts, models, and examples of photography you put together are well worth the time and effort it takes to make them. I understand now more than ever the basics of photography.
This exposure class was wonderful! I get headaches after each class from everything I have learned! All I know is that I am so glad that I found your website through a link someone posted on flickr.com because I would never be able to afford or take a class at a college.
I will be sticking around for a long while! Hope yall can make a tour around the US *cough* West Palm *cough*!
Great job all of you! (Craig, John, Jason, Rich, and the rest of yall!)
Thank you…..I loved this class. You told me so much, but seemed to dumb-it down so that I finally got it….completely!
Am loving your course…..thank you, thank you!
This is a really excellent class. I especially appreciate the visual representations of how things work. And John’s photographs are wonderful!
I am really appreciating this particular class. John is an excellent instructor, and the illustrations that he’s created for the various concepts that he’s discussing are really the best I’ve ever seen. I’ve been taking photographs for 20 years, and I am still learning a lot from his instruction. Thanks so much for making this quality instruction available.
Great class. I have been very impressed with John’s attention to the detail that is needed but not going overboard. I bought the class after viewing the second class with no hesitation what so ever. The purchase of the class allows access to the Q&A which is as important and as informative as the lecture itself. Usually I drift off during a lectured style class but the class is so well done in power point and with examples and easy to understand pictured explanations of hard to understand concepts that most books I’ve read on photography lack. He has done an incredible job of building my knowledge from the ground up. One can definitely tell he has devoted a lot of time and effort into refining and making this one heck of an incredible class. Thank you very much John for a great gift!!!
I also am loving this photography course and will be purchasing the downloads in a few minutes. I wanted to say that I have taken a few classes and read tons of books on photography and thought I had a good grasp on using my DSLR, but with each class, John has opened my eyes to new information and techniques etc. I am impressed with all the details that he has added to his presentation. He even explains the simplest things that, I have never heard from other teachers/books that really helped me “get it”. Thank you John and Creative Techs.
Whens download for week 4 available? I keep checking my account
Tx so much for these classes, I just got a cannon rebel 450d and am looking forward to learning more about photography. Cannot attend classes because of school, but have just bought the 10-wk course. Excellent work John keep it up.
Love, love, love this class! I purchased the All-Access pass after seeing the trailer for this Exposure Segment.
One question for John. Does all of the metering info you provided in this segment only apply if you are using evaluative metering? Would the meter move to the right in a bright setting (or in your example with the clay pot and the b/w backgrounds) if you are using spot metering? Or to the left if you are in a dark setting if you are in spot meter mode?
Thanks so much!
John,
In the Q&A for lesson #4 you said you had a question for engineers about about histograms. The question was something like “Why is the area under some histograms very large and under others it is much smaller?” I’m not a camera expert but I think the reason for this is that the vertical axis on the histograms is not a fixed scale. If you have a picture where a lot of the pixels are in one brightness range and pile up to make a very tall histogram, then the vertical scale is changed so that not too much is cut off at the top of the display, this then compresses the whole histogram vertically and makes the area under the curve look smaller.
As I said, I am not an expert so if someone else can confirm this or has another explanation please comment.
Thanks. Great class by the way.
