Q&A From Week 1
Molly Murrah is a self-employed graphic designer living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. She started her own graphic design business in 1984 and has been designing corporate identity programs, marketing collateral, websites, and children’s books ever since. She began painting a little over 10 years ago, when she took an excursion to Greece with a local artist. To date, Molly has exhibited in several shows and is a member of the Northwest Watercolor Society and Eastside Association of Fine Arts. Please visit Molly’s website.
Hi Creative Tech……..I would like to know more about Molly’s class. I took Lisa Shaftel’s (didn’t you sponsor it?) online and enjoyed it a lot. I would like to see some samples of Molly’s work and to know the fee. Waiting to hear from you. Jennifer
Jennifer, unfortunately my painting website, though designed, has not been posted yet. It will be up in a week or two. I have a portfolio PDF that could be viewed, but will need an email address that I can send it to. You can contact me through my graphic design website: http://www.murrahco.com
Is this computer watercoloring or paper and brush?
Diana, this class will be a paint brush to paper class… that is if enough people sign up for the four week series proposed after the class introduction on December 18th. Please join us. I will also be talking about how learning to paint in watercolor helped me tremendously in my graphic design career.
Was hoping this was a computer class using Corel Painter 11. I live out of state and will not be able to attend.
will likely be attending to absorb what i can about color and light assessment, but am a novice painter11 user, mostly for photographic enhancement.
James, this first class is just an introduction to watercolors… a teaser of sorts to see if people are interested in pursuing a hands-on 4-week series. There will be no painting involved this time, but we will certainly get there if the interest is great enough.
Hi,
downloaded the pdf several times now but the pictures are all blacked out sort of, so one can only see darkgrey shadows of shapes in the black. Never experienced this problem with pictures in a pdf before. Do you know what can be done to fix this?
Kind Regards
Anne-Sofi
Hi, Anne-Sofe.
I have downloaded this file and I’m not seeing a problem. Do you have the latest version of Reader installed?
http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Hi,
I really, really, really want to take this course, but work on Friday mornings. Will every week be the same time?
Barbara, we have to wait and see if enough people show interest in taking an actual course with demos and painting instruction. We don’t have a final 4-week schedule worked out yet. CreativeTechs will have to decide that if we move forward. Thanks for asking.
Yes, Barbara, but if you enroll and check back about a week the course begins, you’ll find a purchase link for buying the downloads of the course.
Hey Molly, thank you for making a free water-coloring class available. I was wondering if you truly are going to have the second class on Christmas morning?
LindieLee… There is no schedule set at all. This class is a one-time class unless CreativeTechs decides to give it again, depending on interest. Please stay tuned to see where we end up.
Opps, just saw that the third class should be on January 1st – New Years day. Will you have class that day? How many weeks of classes are you offering? Thank you so much.
Hi
It’s really great of you to give up your time and offer this free class, and I am very interested. I’m in the UK so I think this makes the classes 7pm for me, which would be ok if its not over Christmas and New Year.
Do we need to get anything ready or will we just be watching?
thanks again
Lynne
Lynne, the first class is just to watch a presentation on why I feel watercolors are such a magical medium to work in. It is a unique painting experience and becoming a watercolor artist has helped me tremendously in my career as a graphic designer… something I didn’t realize would benefit me to the degree it has. Please join us and see for yourself whether you are inspired to want more.
Just as well you’re on the west coast
I’m in Australia (east coast) & i will be 6.00 on Saturday morning here which is easily doable.
I hope a beginner who’s still afraid of his paints will be welcome.
Kind regards
Larry
Larry, this class is specifically for beginners. The person I had in mind when I created the presentation was one who has never painted, but has a creative side that wants to be expressed in a new, exciting way. All are welcome, but beginners – in search of motivation – will hopefully benefit from this class and be inspired to actually pick up a brush and start painting. Do see what you think and let us know whether you want to see more.
This sounds perfect for me but I just found out about it, it starts in two hours, and I’m on the road today! WAH-A-AHH! I’d like to be included in emails about future classes. Thank you so much; good luck today!
JoAnn, the class went very well and will be posted by CreativeTechs soon for viewing at your leisure. It looks like the 4-week series will be produced, so stay tuned.
We can’t listen to the broadcast because the sound is repeating, echoing.
Emily, I’m afraid CT will need to address this technical issue. Hope you can get it figured out… Molly
Emily, this can happen if you accidentally have two versions of the live presentation open at one time.
Next time, please check that you have only one video open at a time. If you use both the GoToWebinar and the Live page open at the same time (2 different ways of seeing the same class – see http://creativetechs.com/training/faq/#GTWvL), make sure that one of them is muted. You can mute GoToWebinar by clicking “use telephone” (and don’t use a telephone). You can mute the Live page by clicking the audio button in the lower-left corner of the page. Please note that the Live page is delayed about 15-20 seconds.
Thank you for the wonderful seminar. I was pleasantly surprised that watercolor could be so enticing and beautiful. I look forward to more of Molly’s classes.
JoJo… obviously I’m in love with this artistic medium and hope to inspire others to try it and see how they feel. My position is this – there aren’t enough artists in this world! Maybe we can add a few more to the ranks. Thanks for your comments very much! – Molly
I’m devastated. This is one I really wanted to see and I thought it was at 9:30pm est. Will there be a way to see the session on video?
Yes, there will. The class will be posted soon on the CT site and you can view it when it’s convenient for your schedule. Thank for asking.
I sorry I missed the class. Took the kids to school and didn’t get back home until late in the day. Please let me know if the class continues.
Sherree, it looks like the class will be continuing with the 4-week series. It will be basic instruction on what a beginner in the medium will need to know to get started on their own. The video of the class yesterday will be posted sometime soon. You can check with CT to find out when. Thanks for asking and I hope you join us in the series… Molly
Hi I missed this;
will you be posting the video online? I don’t see it anywhere
The video should be posted soon. Please keep checking. In the meantime the links for the various artists discussed are posted and you can check out their sites… some wonderful art to be seen!
I want to start doing watercolors. I am looking forward doing your lessons.
FANTASTIC, Donna! The hands-on classes should give you enough information and skill building to get you started. Should be a lot of fun for you.
Just signed up for the Friday sessions beginning Feb 19, 2010. I’ve tried WC a couple times with a lot of frustration. A class I took was too advanced. This sounds like it’s just what I need. I’ve passed info on to members of our local art group and hope a few of them will sign up. Thank you and thanks to CT for offering this course.
Well, thank you, Cynthia for passing the word. My hope is to impart enough information for beginners to really get started on their own and be able to progress far enough to figure out if watercolor is a medium they want to stick with. I hope you end up loving it as much as I do!
Hi I’m interested in the water color course please let me know what to do I do folk art and water color is something
I’ve wanted to try thanks for the chance to learn. Elaine
Elaine, just register for the class and watch the live sessions. And if you can’t watch the live sessions, you can download the series (8-10 hours of hands-on instruction) for not much more than a single class with a teacher would cost. The first session on Feb. 19 will be a rerun of the overview and in it there will be a supplies list that will be what you need to get started. Hope you can make it!
Took me time to read all the comments, but I really enjoyed the article. It proved to be Very helpful to me and I am sure to all the commenters here! It’s always nice when you can not only be informed, but also entertained! I’m sure you had fun writing thx
Well, I hope you can join us! The first class will be a fine tuned repeat of the overview given in December, but after that we will start painting! We will begin with painting exercises that will allow beginners to figure out the properties of the paints, how to use brushes, how papers differ from each other, etc. We need more painters in the world and I’m hoping this class will help with that!
It is exciting to start and learn about watercolors. I am a visual person and I’m glad you are having this. Thanks
I am enrolled in Molly’s class starting February – really looking forward to studying with her. I tried to play the “Course Video Overview”, but it stops in about 2 minutes (just as she is talking about her painting of her son’s cat. I would welcome any suggestions for how to view the video. Thanks.
Barbara, I don’t know enough about how the podcasts are posted to help you figure this out. I would suggest contacting the support team at CreativeTechs directly to see what they have to say. The overview class, however, will be the first class given on Feb. 19. It will be somewhat different from the first overview given in December, and will have more information on the supplies we will be using. Glad you will be with us!
I tried to watch the class on Friday, but shortly before the class actually started the feed went black. I don’t understand how it can be something from my end when dozens of other people all over the country…different computers, programs, servers can all have the same problem. So far I haven’t heard of anyone that actually got to “watch” the class! This kind of thing can be anoying when one is soooo looking forward to seeing you!!
I have also looked everywhere to find a way to contact CreativeTechs but I haven’t found it yet….can you help??? is there a link? to ask questions??
thanks
arlene
Arlene, on the Frequently Asked Questions page there is a link to contact CreativeTechs: training@creativetechs.com. You can write them there and they will respond.
I’m so sorry you had trouble with the feed. There were many people who had no trouble at all and got to see and hear the entire broadcast. Then there were some who heard everything, but didn’t see the video, and many who saw the video, but heard nothing. Since many people didn’t have trouble, it seems that the broadcast was sent out from the studio OK, and that is why we believe it was a server problem with the company used to feed the show online or on the receiver’s end.
CreativeTechs will be working hard this week to solve this problem so that, hopefully, it won’t be an issue this coming week. We will do everything we can. Please join us on Friday coming up, as we will get into more details about Paints & Color, and will be painting during the show.
Thanks for your comments… we will do our best to bring you a great experience this coming week.
Hi Molly and all
I saw and heard the whole class and it was WONDERFUL!!!!!! I learned a lot and am looking forward to the rest of the course. THANK YOU for all of your hard work and dedication. I know that the beginning tech problems will be solved. I encourage everyone in the class to be patient and keep watching. You will not be disappointed. Molly is a wonderful teacher and artist. Hope to see and hear you in class on Friday. Regards.
Thanks for having this avaliable, as my computer wouldn’t get the pictures h last week. for this week, hope it works. Barb
Barbara, CreativeTechs is working hard this week to make sure we don’t have a repeat of the technical problems we experienced last week. We really appreciate everyone’s patience, but I have to admit… if you all could see the studio and see how many “pieces” have to be coordinated to make this process work, you would be amazed that it works at all! At least I am.
I just know that, though it is a lot of work, I’m having a fantastic time and I love thinking that some folks out there might pick up a brush for the first time and love doing painting in this incredible medium like I do!
Absolutely wonderful – I have been wanting to take a watercolor class for years – and now I get to take one in my living room here in London. Thanks
Thank you, Mary Elizabeth, and thank you also, Barbara above, for your kind words. I really appreciate them and they fuel me to keep on doing a good job!
Hello, Molly,
I have tried to sign up for your class twice but i do not get the confirmation email from CT and i did add them to my Address Book. I signed up a week before the first class (Feb 19th class). I checked my email address when i signed up the second time and it was correct but still no confirmation email from CT. Was the class closed at a certain point? Should i try to sign up again. I watched the Overview and learned some useful pointers. I would really like to join you for the rest of your series.
SueEllen, please contact training@creativetechs.com and explain your situation. I don’t have anything to do with the enrollment, but I’m sure they will be glad to help you. I have no idea why you don’t end up getting enrolled… I have not heard that from anyone else.
You can view the class for the next four Fridays at 11:00 a.m. PST at:
http://www.creativetechs.com/training/live
You don’t need to log in, unless you want to create a nickname and join the chat room. The email beforehand is really for those folks who want to watch using Go To Webinar. But that process won’t let anyone actually see the demonstrations, so CreativeTechs recommends that you watch the live feed instead anyway.
I do hope you join us, but do contact CT in the meantime and explain your issue. Thanks for letting me know.
If I am planning on attending the free class tomorrow (at the studio), do I need to sign up somewhere different than the webinar?
Heather, this particular class is a bit different. In order to set up the tables for the live participants, we are having to take out most of the “comfy” chairs that studio viewers get to sit in, so basically we are asking non-participant viewers not to show up in person. Our four class participants were selected a while ago in order to ensure we had people who could make the 5-week commitment.
I’m sorry. Wish we could have LOTS of people in the room, but space limitations prevent that. Thanks for asking.
Hi, Molly and CT – I enjoyed the initial class on 2/19… had some difficulty viewing so tonight viewed it again and got all the info sans seeing you–hopefully tomorrow will work will. I starting taking art classes at about age 7-8…, some in high school, art appreciation in college…couldn’t minor in it as I was Bus. Admin. and couldn’t have a minor. After college I took 7 adult ed art classes. I like taking classes because then I paint. For about a 10-year stretch did not paint…then I took a two-semester drawing class at a local college from a well-known local watercolor artist (1988/89). In 1991 I finally took a watercolor from another well-known watercolorist…great methods & class, but I did not do any watercolor painting after that.(all of the above were in Virginia). Since 1996 I’ve taken several oil painting classes(some Bob Ross methods).
once again I haven’t painted since 2004/5. Now after experienceing your first session, I’m inspired to try watercolor painting again!
Well, Phyllis, you are exactly who this class is about! People who are inspired to take up this medium and have as much fun with it as I do. I sure hope you keep it up… it sounds like you have art in your blood, so don’t let the fire die down. Remember, it’s only a piece of paper, so don’t let anything discourage you.
I’m leaving right now to go to the studio to start the second class. Hope you have fun with us today!
Hi just came across your blog and have been reading some of your entries and just wondering why you selected a Wordpress blog dont you find it impossible to do anything with? Been thinking about starting one.
Noah, I’m afraid I don’t have a blog, just a standard website: mollymurrah.com Are you talking about CreativeTechs? If so, one of the CT folks will have to answer your question. However, I was just talking with another artist who does have a blog and she uses Wordpress… said it was simple and easy to use… Molly
[...] downloaded. How cool is that?! View their current catalogue of classes. I just enrolled in a watercolour class with Molly Murrah and a photoshop [...]
So, I just came across the Twitter post that I had been selected as the tweeter winner ??? But I don’t know how to contact anyone or if I will be contacted…I missed the first part of the class today because I was at work so I don’t know if I had to be there or not??? Anyway, loving what parts of the class I have been able to attend…and could someone contact me and clarify???
Cindy, just contact training@creativetechs.com to communicate directly with someone at CT. They will gladly help you. And congratulations! It’s terrific of Daniel Smith to offer a gift certificate!
Thank you so much for the info…I LOVE Daniel Smith’s watercolors and there have been a few I’ve been wanting to add to my palette! And thank you for extending this class to those of us not in the Seattle area…I’ve been so inspired to get all my painting supplies out again!!!
That’s just great, Cindy… I’m so glad to hear that you are having fun and feeling inspired. My intent exactly! Help spread the word so we can keep classes like this going. We would love to have more artistic webinars, but enough people have to be interested for us to be able to make that happen. Keep your fingers crossed… M
Hi, Will each week’s class be posted on the CreatvieTechs website? I know that in previous courses, CreativeTechs posted that week’s class and had assumed this course would follow the same procedure. I’ve checked here a couple of times and have only seen the overview class. I missed week 2 and week 3’s audio and video was too choppy for me to follow live. I was hoping to come back to view a replay. Thanks
Pamela,
Downloads of the recorded videos for this class can be purchased for $35 before the class itself ends. Here is the link to purchase:
http://creativetechs.com/members/signup.php?product_id=23
I was hoping to view an actual teaching class to see if I can learn watercolor from this online teaching model. I didn’t want to purchase the class till I was sure it would work for me. Hopefully I’ll be able to view this Friday’s class. Thanks for your response.
Pamela, I hope you can watch tomorrow. My intent in creating this course was to give a beginning watercolor student the basic information he or she would need to paint in this fantastic medium. We have had great feedback, one person even saying that she had learned more in one class than in a whole semester college course. I hope you can join us to see for yourself…
