Almost everything you do in Photoshop involves and isolating selecting pixels. In this fun week, Jason takes us through the fundamental selection tools in Photoshop. You’ve used them all before, but most of us will discover one or two details in here that we didn’t know before. (I’m including myself here. I was surprised to discover one fairly basic feature that I’d overlooked in my years of using Photoshop ~Craig)
As advanced a Photoshop expert as Jason is, he still clearly loves these fundamental tools. I’ve never seen someone enjoy showing the ins-and-outs of the lasso as much as Jason does. What is most striking to me is that when I watch Jason work on real retouching jobs, I realize how important the mastery of these basic tools are for working fast and effectively in Photoshop.
Duration: 90-120 Minutes
Cost: The LIVE classes are FREE to attend! You can also purchase downloadable files of this course for $99 up until Feb. 28, 2010 or $199 after. Hi, I missed the second Photoshop webinar but I signed up. Is the free online viewing still available?
I attended the webinar and learned so much. Thank you.
disappointed that half a week has gone by for the video clip which is available for only a week after the class and it’s still not posted.
I always had hard time with selection – great great great lesson, learned quite a bit. If you missed both class/free video definitely buy this lesson and other fundamentals.
What happened to week 3’s video to watch before next Thursday?
Can’t wait to see it. The past two weeks have been fantastic!
dianne
Came to view the video for last week’s webinar and it’s not available – disappointed as I didn’t get to watch the whole thing.
Keep checking to watch the video on selections. I was unable to watch it. I have been looking forward to viewing it as I work during the day and cannot watch the webinar and count on the video post. Thank you!
Was hoping the Photoshop video would be posted by now. There were technical difficulties last week and I got thrown out and missed the last part of the class before the Q&A. What I did get to see what great, but was curious about using the brushes part….
This is such a great learning vehicle…will be purchasing some of the downloads!
I missed the 3rd (selections) class and thought I could watch it before next Thurs. I have really enjoyed the first 2. Thanks, Took me awhile to find and navagate to this place to post.
can you please post the video for week three? thanks!!!
I got it. I read the FAQs. I totally understand your position. I would have made an extra effort to catch the web program on Th if I had known you were not going to offer the video afterwards like you said in the previous weeks. Don’t promote yourselves as free when it isn’t. It is misleading advertising. Good luck to you
Couldn’t agree more! And I’ve just finished a week’s stay in the blessed hospital, during which I was sorry to miss last Thursday’s class, but was so grateful that I’d be able to catch it thereafter.
Piffle! DON’T CHANGE THE RULES OF THE GAME PART WAY THROUGH — you simply engender mistrust, not the world’s greatest selling tool.
when will we see this video feed? I am unable to attend on Thursdays and have been waiting to see this ever since
what the hell yall its now monday morning and still no video posted not even a excerpt. The weekend is perfect time for me to watch these and now i have to fit it in before thursday. This sucks!
What really sucks its getting booted out of the webinar then not being able to get back in and then my time was up because I was at work and my lunch was over.
So are you going to post this or what.
B. They will be posted by Monday morning. I’m still working on details. ~Craig
I missed Thursday’s class as well – I’m confused a bit. I thought the recordings would be available to view for a week after the class – all that is here is a couple of excerpts from the class. Will the full class be available on the site or am I out of luck? If not, this would be a huge disappointment, since the expectation was that these would be available for free for at least the week in between each session.
Helen,
We are moving away from posting the free full class videos for a week. As soon as we started offering those free-for-a-week videos, the purchase of downloads immediately dropped to a level that isn’t sufficient for us to maintain our online classroom.
So going forward, we’ll be posting “excerpts” of each live event for free. The way to get the entire class is either to attend the webinar live (which remains free), or to purchase the downloads for that course (purchase links are at the right).
We’re working out details on a “catch-up” day to help people who missed earlier free showing get up to speed. And for the Photoshop Selections class, we’re working out how to let the people who got bumped from last week’s class see the class video.
I’ve email you (directly) a link to a password-protected post with a video from last week’s class. We’ll be emailing everyone on the Photoshop class list shortly.
~Craig
Hi Craig,
I totally understand from your business point of view. I try by best to attend the class but since I am doing that from work I regularly get interrupted and sometimes miss some vital information. So even if you guys can post the video for a day it would be very helpful for me to go home and watch it without interruption.
Just want to thank you all for a great great class.
Bad call! You ought to have thought all of this out prior to announcing this offer. Foretelling this scenario wasn’t exactly rocket science.
It was so impressive that you’d decided to do this one-off freebie and I think you would not only have gotten your (good) name around, but would have engendered enough good will to have increased FUTURE sales, word-of-mouth recommendations, all that good stuff.
But immediate sales didn’t leap through the ceiling and in fact fell so you make the offer a bit less sweet? This really surprises you? So, if you were a bakery and had decided for one day to offer free brownies, what, by the second hour when you saw a dip in your sweets’ sales you would reduce those free brownies to free sixteenths of brownies, barely enough for anyone to taste? You don’t get it that if they get to really savor a brownie they might later come back (and pay) to try your croissants???
Yeah, okay, the “freebie” in full is still there, but there are a bunch of us (including those of us abroad — who still have credit cards and a desire to access good tutorials) who simply cannot make it Thursdays for whom that REAL, FULL, repeat was another particularly impressive gesture. Methinks you’re simply punishing a segment of your potential clientele this way, NOT increasing your sales.
You embarked upon a good, attention-getting, promotional campaign, keep it up, AS ADVERTISED!
I just purchase the $15 Selections class download, but now am unable to get back in to download the PDF’s for the class–how can I do that?
I’ve emailed your question to training@creativetechs.com. David will send you a new link shortly. ~Craig
Craig -
For some reason I was cut-off for the Q&A in the “selections” session. I tried to log-in again but was informed the session was filled to capacity. After three minutes I tried a couple of times to log-in and each time was sent to your website for this weeks session.
Did you have a complete Q&A? If so is there any way to listen to it?
Thank you,
jerry
Jerry, we were ALL cut-off during last week’s Q&A. It was a GoToWebinar glitch that we’re still looking into. Hopefully that problem won’t crop up again.
~Craig
I am disappointed in the fact that you said the video would be available for a full week and now you only post an excerpt. That is called deceptive advertising. Had I known it wasn’t going to be available like you said I would have made other arrangements.
I’m sorry. As I’ve said before, we’re working on a catch-up option. The free-for-a-week option was an experiment we tried after the first class was so overfilled — but it wasn’t sustainable.
These classes have been an interesting concept but to be perfectly honest, I’ve learned much more at Lynda.com You only pay $25.00 a month on unlimited video lessons on EVERY software out there practically. I have found the classes here to be a bit confusing at times and the schedules hard to make. I like being able to watch on my own schedule. If Creative Techs does what Lynda is doing and makes it an affordable subscription (25 bucks a month is sure better than 50) then I’ll check back. Thanks for trying….but learn from Lynda and try a less expensive subscription with more offerings and you’ll be competitive.
Lynda.com is excellent. I have a subscription myself. I’d be interested in any other comments on how our classes compare to Lynda.com.
The big difference we’re working towards is providing a live, interactive classroom experience. Lynda.com provides a great service, as does Kelby Training.
We’re trying to do something a little different.
Hello,
I watched last week’s photoshop class (9/17) and it was awesome. I’m a huge fan of all shortcuts so I found it very helpful. I did screen caps of all the great tips and made notes throughout the webinar so I wouldn’t forget. I did however manage to lose that doc after my PC crashed…can you please remind me which keys to use to draw a circle from the CENTER? I have tried several different options but none worked.
Thanks!
Amy
To draw a circle selection from the center, hold down OPTION on the Mac or ALT on Windows.
Can’t wait to get the ‘catch up’ details emailed to me. I was so disappointed when I got booted almost right away then never managed to get back in the room (assuming other people could even get in at the time).
Keep up the good work guys!
This new approach is excellent, Craig! I’m somewhat confused as to how people can be so angry over not being able to access the free videos every week. You guys have to make money!
Keep up the great work!
Thank you J.J.
It’s been hard reading the frustration in these comments. I really appreciate your note!
Of course they do, J.J., but not all returns are immediate …
its really quite simple – ct made an offer for the current courses, and then withdrew it once people had seen one or two lessons from a 5 or ten lesson course, to replace it with something much lesser. It doesn’t engender long term trust, so may be counter-productive in the long term.
I got booted off while trying to get into the seminar for which I’d been present at for the past 2 classes. I keep trying for over an HOUR to get in. The software enabling the webinar would load, then would NOT launch after saying it was succesfully installed. Generally, a clock with a timer would be on the screen giving a countdown until when the class begins, this one, after NUMBEROUS attempts wouldn’t allow either. You posted this notice on the videos page:
Note: In addition to this excerpt, we are working on a catch-up option for the people who had to leave last week’s class because of technical issues at the start of class. We’ll be emailing a note to the people who were signed up in that Thursday class.
I havene’t received anything and class will begin in 3 day and I’m one of those who experienced technical difficults trying to get in. Access would be granted, then all of a sudden KICKED OUT having the try again but without success.
Also, what is this “EXCEPTS” being posted business??!!! Why wasn’t there a complete video of the ENTIRE class on Selections posted. Every other class has been the ENTIRE lesture. Is this some sort of attempt to make you buy the class? You guys say to “spread the Word”. Well, why spread the word when only 1000 can get in at any given time. What is the purpose of asking us to tell everyone, if we will all have to “vie” for attendance seating??!!!!!
I immenseley enjoyed the claases on the Basics (1st class) and Layers, and NOT to be able to get in on Selections (a class I so desperately wanted) due to difficulties is most disheartening and
disconcerting.
What was the benefit of enrolling and then “asking” us to SPREAD THE WORD if all is in vain?????!!!!!
Deb. I hear the frustration. I’ll just repeat what our experience has been here, and why we needed to make this change. I understand if it is frustrating or angering for some people.
We started offering these free live webinars in February 2009. From the start, the live classe were free, and we covered our costs with the downloads. That model worked, and we added more and more classes.
This month, when we kicked off the new Photoshop and Photography courses, many more than 1,000 people wanted to attend that live event — and we had a lot of people frustrated that they missed out. I started the free-video-for-a-week site in response to that frustration.
The income from downloads dropped by 90% almost immediately. And if we had continued with that model, we would have had to stop our classroom.
I wish it had worked! I put a lot of hours into setting up the free-video-for-a-week site. I was honestly a little heartbroken that it didn’t work. It was a hard choice to scrap that idea.
As I’ve said many times, we’re committed to bringing this training to as large an audience as we can reach. And we’ll be looking for tools in addition to GoToWebinar to increase our 1,000 person limit.
But we have to maintain an economic model that can sustain itself. I’m very sorry for the misstep.
I, like so many others, had looked forward to watching the video. I cannot attend the seminars during the daytime hours (like most people, I am at work during the early afternoon) and was very, very excited to find the free-for-a-week videos. I’ve been spreading the word about this like crazy, but I don’t think I will anymore. More people knowing about it lessens the chance that I might get in. The free-for-a-week videos were worth sharing, but no more.
I think spreading the word now is not in our own best interest. It seems a lot of people were not able to log in due to the 1000p limit.
I was really looking forward to the selections video, too. : (
I agree with you all the way!
I got angry because I made an agreement with these people to take a class that they offered. I even posted about it on my blog and had quite a few responses to it, even. I had been looking for a good Photoshop course and I believe this one would have been it. I’ll never know, now. One good thing about it, though. The “class full” notice came BEFORE I clicked on the PayPal button to purchase the class material.
I can’t believe that the class was even “oversold”, or over-registered. At this point, registration should have been closed or another class added. I’m not going to spend my Thursday afternoon, repeatedly logging in to take a class I might not get in to.
Sorry, but, that is just how I feel! It’s wrong to run an ad, then, default on it.
Su
I fully understand that you guys need $ in order to make this available. Since we didn’t know that last week’s video would not be posted, is there any way for those of us who couldn’t make it to the webinar to catch up? A make up class? A 1 day free posting of the class?
Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together and to read all of our whiny comments. I sincerely appreciate your efforts.
Beg your pardon, but simply because we disagree does not make our comments “whiney”!! It borders on fraudulent marketing to offer one thing for X number of weeks, and just after embarking upon it, change the terms.
So sad that you can’t afford to keep posting the videos. 2am is just not acheivable for me
. I’ll be looking forward to the catch up option!
I wish I had have known that you wouldn’t be posting the full class anymore, I would have got up early to attend the class.( thats if I could get in).
I was spreading the word about it being available for free for the week on flickr, facebook and twitter.
I will be buying the classes but just can’t afford it at the moment and was enjoying being able to watch the class at my own leisure.
I think the real frustration, for me at least, comes from the fact that there was no prior warning that the free-for-a-week videos would be stopped (none that I saw anyway). I actually managed to login to the webinar but decided to open my spot for another, thinking I could watch the video later at a more convenient time. I have no issue with them being stopped, as afterall they are a great resource, but it would have been nice to at least complete last week’s one.
Perhaps the first 5 classes, ie Photoshop Fundamentals, could be made available to download for free in order to still spread the word and allow newcomers to get a taster and entice them to subscribe/purchase following classes.
In either case, I’ll be looking forward to the catch-up option.
I am looking forward to getting the video from this class. I absolutely could not log in Thursday; gotowebinar kept telling me I was not connected to the internet (I was). I’m guessing this was part of the technical difficulties last Thursday. I loved the layers class! So very informative.
Hmmm… I wonder when the catch-up option will be available. Not much time left before the next class :/
Hi, I was not to sign in last week for the “selections” class, it kept bumping me out. Then the class was full. I was finally able to get in at the very last of the q&a. I thought I’d be able to view the entire class and only saw an excerpt. I had emailed you but have not received a response. Any way I can still see the class for free?
NO. They want $
I can see how it would look like a bait and switch to some newcomers, I have been attending these courses for a few months now, since the 4 week course.
At that time there the only alternative to attending the live course was to purchase it. Creativetechs wanted to try to benefit every one by offering the video for viewing free the following week, however it didnt work and it jepordized the class all together, You have to understand that these people are not trying to dupe you in any way. Would you rather no class at all?
I had to purchace one of the single classes myself due to being in the hospital, and I happily paid for it, and will again I am seriously considering the all access pass. Now I am not rich and would be stretching my budget a bit, but You can not get this kind of information anywhere else for this price, can you imagine attending a college course for photoshop? that will cost you big time.
Anyway just my opinion, and KUDOS to the Awesome efforts to the great people at Creativetechs! I will continue to attend and spread the word.
Sandy
I just paid for the 5 weeks. Not a great deal breaker as now I will be able to watch and learn when I am better able to. Am I upset they had to drop the free week after video on the web. NOPE not at all. They have to pay for the hosting, Web Meeting, and even electric to run all of this and still have the class free if you are one of 1000 people to get in.
I have a problem attending your free class — either bumped off or not able to attend.
Is there a way to have access to these videos, if you signed up for the photoshop course?
I appreciate the clip, but it is not the same.
Yeah its sad to see the free video for a week option be cancelled but I guess thats business.
My only problem is that being in Australia i get up at 4am and the whole thing is full of the 1000 users.
The emails 2-3 hours before telling you to grab a seat early is a major disadvantage for me as I’m asleep during this time. Yeah sure email people but dont allow them to grab a spot till 20-30 min before. That way you should actually have people watching the webinar not someone wasting a spot.
See how I go tonight. Thanks
Any other live feeds? The webinar is full….
Hi,
I am so ticked off, right now. I registered for this class as soon as the ad hit my e-mail. I start logging in to the classes at a quarter to the hour and have attended every one. Not today! I haven’t been able to log on and I’m mad! How can there be more people than slots?? This is just so unfair! I better stop, before I say something I will regret.
Su
what’s up with the photoshop class today (the 24th)?
i’ve been trying to get in … i get confirm emails saying i’m in, but i’m not. no problems with any courses until today.
bummer!
Ustream feed would be great compared to webinar.
This program is a joke. They entice people to get on board with false advertising and of course people fall for it and buy their workshops. That is the way they grab the public and trick them into taking their money. The American way. And of course we all fell for it. Something for nothing. Way to go. I am out of here. People who signed up ahead of time can’t even get on the live program now. You guys really run a great business. NOT!!!!!! I am going to the community collage online to get Photoshop. I am sure that one will work.
This program is great!!! I make sure I sign in at least a half hour ahead of time so I have a front row seat. The instructors are wonderful! I wish I had teachers that were so good at explaining when I took my A+ and Net+ certifications.
I can’t afford the entire course, so I appreciate being able to attend the live class. I have learned so much in the two weeks I have attended. We had technical difficulties, but even with that, I learned more than $15 worth of information. I appreciate these guys so much. If I could, I would buy the entire Six-month series. Jason is a very good instructor!!!! I recommend this course for anyone, beginner to advanced.
I seriously think I didn’t receive the before class e-mail notification on the third class. I need PS for idiots, can’t seem to do much as all.
Love these classes and even though I have missed a couple its wonderful to know for a very small investment in my own development I can buy the ones I missed. Now if only I could buy the time to go over those missed classes I bought! *grin*
Thanks CT Crew!
