Photoshop Fundamentals – Basics

Before you repair damage to a treasured family photo, clean up images for your company website or start adding UFOs into the background of your vacation photos you’ll want to know what tools you have to work with and the fastest way to get to them. In this first session Jason Hoppe lays the groundwork for our series by outlining Photoshop CS4’s menus and the keyboard short cuts you’ll want for accessing them.

Duration: 90-120 Minutes
Cost: The LIVE classes are FREE to attend! You can also purchase downloadable files of this course for $99 up until Feb. 28, 2010 or $199 after. Note: if you have previously purchased this course for more than $99, or another 5-week section of this master course, please contact training@creativetechs.com.

I’ve missed the first course – help :-(

  2. Maddy says:

I also was unable to attend the first class, I received a message saying the “class was full” and now I’m trying to view the video but there is no link? The space under Photoshop Fundamentals – Basics is blank there is no start/play button…Can someone help me
    Thanks,
    Maddy

    • PhotoshopVideoThumb.pngMaddy, I’m not sure why you are not seeing the video. I’m posting a screencapture of what this page looks like on my computer. I suspect you may need to update your broswer, or install a newer copy of the Flash plugin. I hope you are able to figure it out.

      ~Craig

      • Maddy says:

Thanks Craig, I’ll keep trying :-)

      • Maddy says:

Craig, you were right there must have been something wrong with Flash installed on the PC I was using, I’m home now and I can see and view the PS video… which btw is excellent! I can’t wait to see next weeks lesson.
        Again Thanks,
        Maddy

  3. Gigisxm says:

I’m interested in purchasing the full 6 month photoshop course, will that be possible or is it only offered in segments?
Will there be a discount for the full package?

Does the monthly access package allow downloads of the videos?

    Thanks in advance
    Gigi

  4. Gigi, yes the monthly access package allows full downloads of the videos. Right now we don’t have a package for just the 6-Month Photoshop Course by itself.

  5. Alvin_Public says:

    Craig,

Just received your email announcing the free class postings, but when I clicked on each of the classes’ URLs every one came back for the Flash class. Just thought you’d like to know so you can fix and resend. (BTW – I found this class post by going to your homepage and navigating here. :-)

I lost my internet connection 8 minutes into the live streaming class last week and was unsuccessful when I tried to reconnect — very frustrating at the time. I was able to get audio feed on the alternate but couldn’t see much of anything on the webcam. So a BIG thanks for this ‘redo’.

  6. Gigisxm says:

thanks for the speedy response! you guys rock!!

  7. Carolyn bedford says:

    thanks guys

Will miss next week’s layer so really appreciate showing it free again on the website. This one I wanted to see.

  8. Laura says:

Is this free video downloadable? It’s way too small and fzzy to see the menu items here. If it’s not downloadable, can it be enlarged for better viewing?

    Thanks!

    • The free videos are 640×360. They are slightly reduced to fit in this blog template, but not much.

Full resolution videos are available to everyone who purchases course downloads. Also, the paid course downloads include the ability to download courses directly to iTunes as well as syncing with an iPhone/iPod.

      • Laura says:

Thanks for the explanation. I find the blog space too small tofollow easily, so I’m wondering if there’s any option to buy a single, downloadable lesson, rather than the whole series?

      • Laura, we don’t currently have an option to buy a single, downloadable lesson, rather than the whole series. We’ve changed the way we process orders, and the amount of work needed to create individual lesson downloads is prohibitive.

I’m sure we’ll get a lot of requests. And we’re always looking for ways to serve more people, so don’t take this as a final answer. But probably no single-downloads in the near future.

  9. Carol says:

    Hi folks!
Thanks a million for sharing the videos for the week following each class. This means that I can also take the Photoshop one which it didn’t suit me to watch on a Thursday. Fantastic! And I learned things even in the “Basics”. I’ve posted your links on my blog.

I notice on your video that whenever you use a modifier key, such as the spacebar to move the image around, a grey bar appears on screen listing the modifier key used. Is this something you add in post production or is a feature of the OS? Or better yet, can you tell me how I could activate it on my Mac? I find it to be a very useful reminder and would like to use it to teach others.

    Thanks for the great videos!

  11. BOB KUPRION says:

I attended your 1st lesson of Photoshop and I am so impressed with the teaching ability I am ready to subscribe.

I do not know what lifetime subscrition means. Please explain.

Will the q&a sesions be included in the subscriptions.

  12. Thanks Bob! There are two ways you can choose to subscribe: You can purchase individual courses, or you sign-up for a monthly All-Access Pass:

    PhotoshopLifetime.png
    A. Individual Courses.
Here is the checkbox for Jason’s current 5-Week Photoshop course. The phrase “lifetime subscription” in the sign-up page simply means that subscription never expires. You’ll be able to continue downloading copies of these class files for the indefinate future.

    MonthlyMembership.png
    B. All-Access Pass
We added the All-Access Pass for people who were signing up for multiple courses, and basically supporting us in almost everything we’ve offered. This is a $50/month option that gives you access to all the courses we’re offering. Unlike the one-time purchase of individual courses, it is an ongoing monthly subscription.

    Make sense?

    • Shirley in NJ says:

      Hi Craig!! :D

Am I correct in understanding this to say that if I purchase the monthly subscription, I’ll only be able to watch online? Not download and watch later? IOW, I must do all viewing within that month?

      Shirley in NJ

    • CT-Craig says:

      Hi Shirley!

The All-Access Pass is was made with you in mind! You get everything. You can download the video files, the exercise files, everything. In fact it is giving us some options to bring back the iTunes feeds we used to offer for our earlier classes, so you can get the latest movies right in iTunes.

As long as you keep the monthly pass, you’ll be able to download everything.

      ~Craig :)

  13. Dona says:

I just watched the free video and realize I will forget alot of it by next week’s class. I am now trying to figure out how to put it on a disc to review later. Is that possible?

    • Dona, that’s exactly why people purchase the downloads for courses. There are purchase links on the right side of this blog that will allow you to easily get access to the full downloads for Jason’s 5-Week Photoshop Fundamentals course, or an All-Access Pass giving you access to everything we’ve got.

    • Catherine says:

Buy the course. You won’t regret it (I bought some of their courses and they where and still are very helpfull). It’s not very expensive and so CT can continue giving us these cool classes.

  14. Carl Crumley says:

How frustrating! This is like every other Photoshop course I’ve tried to take — nothing matches up with the image on screen. I have CS4 and when I open it up, it’s not the same as displayed in the course. When the instructor says “click here,” the icon he clicks on is in the middle of the upper task bar, but the same icon on mine is at the upper right.

6 of the first 7 things he showed didn’t match my program.

I’m not going to frustrate myself trying to do this online. I need to be in a classroom so I can stop the instructor and say, “Wait a minute! Why is your icon in the center and mine at the right if they’re the same program?!?”

    Thanks anyway.

    • Chris says:

Carl, is it possible one of you has Phtoshop CS4 and the other Photoshop CS4 extended? That might make the difference……or…..Your Preferences might not be set the same. I have Photoshop CS3 but haven’t found it too difficult with the differences. Sorry you’re having a hard time.

  15. Karen Kreps says:

Carol, you’ll want to buy the full course so you can watch and re-watch the many classes. I’ve bought them all (Photoshop, InDesign, Flash, Illustrator), everything but the digital photography course. It’s helpful to watch the video and then execute what is taught using the actual application (Photoshop CS4). CreativeTechs.com will supply the excercise files. Make your purchase as soon as possible to get the courses at the lowest prices–they go up 50% during the course of the class. But the prices are ridiculously low for what you get. On a 10 week course, that’s 20 hours of expert instruction for just $50.

  16. Jill says:

Thanks so much for posting these for free! I attended last week’s Photoshop course, and really enjoyed it & am looking forward to more. However, I’m in Perth Australia, where the courses run at 2am – luckily I didn’t have to work very early the next day, but I’m sure there will likely be some weeks that I can’t attend as I need sleep, so I really appreciate the free courses (& I’m glad that the weeks I can’t attend, someone else will have the opportunity to join the live class :) )

  17. Pam says:

This is such a great idea on your part. My hopes are always high that I will be able to sit down at my computer every week and the same time but sometimes things come up. My life is full of interruptions. This way I’m not totally stressed if I miss a part of the class because I can re-watch it later. It’s a little like self-paced but with a deadline. Very customer friendly. Works great for me !!! Thanks.

  18. Mary Jane Rutkowski says:

    Hi Guys
Love the classes! Thanks! I am not seeing the video for the Photoshop class. I’m using Firefox. Any ideas?

  19. Laura says:

    >Laura, we don’t currently have an option to buy a single, downloadable lesson, rather than the whole series.

Too bad! I think you”re limiting the money you could make by limiting sales to the entire course. Some of us would prefer not adding huge files to be saved, and might only want to review a few key concepts. And by selling each lesson for $15 or $20, you’d stand to earn more than the $75 from interested attnedees.
Ah, well. Do let me know when and if this option changes. I definitely am not interested in purchases whole classes, but would be much more inclined to buy several sessions. Perhpas you can create a different kind of ‘lifetime pass” that woud enable a limited number of downloads per month or something like that

  20. rhonda says:

many thanks for the re-post of the class I was so disappointed when I got a “Classroom full” comment when I tried to log in to the class. I was under the impression with a confirmation upon registering that you had a seat so to speak………

This is great, many thanks for not leaving us hanging, I will be purchasing the full class cd at the end!

  21. tjmuse says:

I did not get the notcie about the new classes starting and was so glad to find this posted here. I have been using PS for a while now and even I learned things in this very first class.

  22. Amber says:

Really good class so far… interesting and well taught. I missed the first class online, but am looking forward to the second class. This is seriously making me consider taking your paid classes and that is saying something.

    Good job.

  23. Simon Shadowlight says:

Wow! Thanks so much for posting as I often have to work during the schedule live events.

How much to purchase this 6-month course?

  24. Monique says:

Thanks so much for posting the video of the class I missed last week, it was an effort for me to get up at 3.45 am here in Australia and not be able to attend the class because it was full.

I found the class to be very valuable, I learned a lot as a beginner to photoshop and will be buying it soon!

Quick question….I noticed your selling photoshop as a 5 week fundamentals package, but can we buy the full 6 month course?

What would be best for me to do as I would also like to buy the 10 week digital photography course?

    • CT-Craig says:

      Monique, thanks!

I’ll be going over purchase options at the start the next couple classes. If you want the full 6-month Photoshop series, plus access to the previous 10-week edition, you’ll probably want to pick the All-Access Pass option.

I’ll show everyone how that works tomorrow AM.

  25. Patti says:

I don’t think this class is for someone who knows nothing about photoshop. It gave me an understanding to use pull down bars and icons but alot of the terminology is way over my head. Are there any very beginning photo shop classes

  26. Doreen says:

I was wondering whereabouts to go to for the download of the video for this first class. I couldnt see a download button I have paid for the 5 week Fundamentals Course and would like to download it as it appears too small on my screen by playing it from this website. I wouldnt want to miss out on the download when the 10 days are finished.

    • CT-Craig says:

Doreen, I’ll be emailing everyone who purchased downloads today with links and details. I’ll be demonstrating how to access these files at the start of our next several webinar classes, including the Photography and Photoshop classes this week. Thanks for your support!

      ~Craig

PS> We’re going to be providing videos of the courses at full HD resolution. The HD recordings of the Photography course are uploading right now, the Photoshop HS recordings will be posted later today.

      • Doreen says:

Pity I am unable to watch the class on the Webinar as I live in Australia and we are 15 hours ahead of EST and more or PST,

  27. Alexa says:

Hey guys, just attended a webinar for the first time, it was awesome and I cant thank you enough for what you’re doing.

My question is, when will the video of lesson 2 be available here to view? When it’s posted for a week I mean?

Thanks and see you guys next time!

Keep up the good work :)

    • CreativeTechs Training says:

We’re going to be shooting for next day posting of the videos but sometimes there are problems in editing or processing and we may not get them up for 2 or 3 days. Hopefully those occasions will be rare ones.

  28. Monique says:

can’t wait for the next video!!

  29. Elizabeth says:

Hi, I just read your Tweet asking who was coming to the live class in Seattle. Where can I find details about that? It probably bit me several times, but I just can’t seem to find it and would be interested in attending if I am able. Thanks!

  30. CreativeTechs Training says:

    Manraj -

There were technical problems with yesterday’s recording session so we’re running behind on getting it posted. It will hopefully be up by Saturday.

  31. Robyn says:

I missed the 1st course Basics and was wondering how I can view the video?

    Thanks,

    Scrappin Robyn

    • CreativeTechs Training says:

      Robyn -

At this point you would need to purchase either the downloads for 5 Week Photoshop Fundamentals or an All Access Pass. We post each week’s class ASAP after the live broadcast and then leave it online until we post the recording of the next week’s class.

  32. Carol says:

    Outstanding, Jason!
And this time I took notes! I was thinking that as a way to continue promoting your classes (as a thank you), I could post a couple of the things I learn each week on my blog, if you have no objection.

  33. Marsha says:

I got kicked out of the selections class soon after Q&A started – and can’t get back in. Will you please send out or post that part of the class? Thanks!

These classes are so great, I hate to miss anything!

  34. Claire says:

Gutted I missed the first one! Learnt so much today – absolutely brilliant, thank you!

  35. Roy Lemons says:

are the phtoshop classes on layers still available for purchase

  36. Hi,

Have just found your web site, is it possible to join the 6 month photoshop course? What fees would be needed to get any missed lessons to play catch up.
